Richard Gordon, General Manager/Owner Before entering the restaurant world, Richard worked as a criminal prosecutor in Boston handling hate crime, elder abuse and school violence cases. While growing up in New York with parents who loved to eat, Richard was exposed to a wide-ranging culinary experience and developed a penchant for cooking at an early age. He longed for something different after fifteen years of practicing law when he learned that his neighborhood coffee shop was for sale in 2005. After much soul-searching, he and his partner decided to open South End Buttery and offer the kind of foods they liked to eat – healthy, hearty, simple dishes. For Richard, the move seemed like destiny: while in law school, he had worked in the Buttery space twenty years earlier as a waiter and event manager when the space was a thriving catering business. Richard received his undergraduate degree in political science and english at Tufts University and his J.D. from Boston University School of Law. He lives in the South End with his three dogs, Madison, Harriet and Simon. |

Carolyn Fitzpatrick, Chef de Cuisine From her unique flair for combining fresh ingredients and creating new and exciting infusions to her beautiful presentations, Carolyn is the epitome of the Buttery concept: simple, healthy cooking without a lot of fuss. Carolyn has been a chef in the New England and East Coast restaurant scene for over 20 years, working at such esteemed establishments as Hart’s Location, New Hampshire’s Notchland Inn (which was named one of the top ten B & B’s in the United States during her tenure), Tables of Content Catering and Presidential Yachts. She favors drawing from Asian and French cuisine, but loves infusing into her food flavors from all over the globe. Her favorite chefs and sources of inspiration include Ina Garten, Martha Stewart and Thomas Keller. Carolyn graduated from Newbury College and has studied under Julia Child, Michel Richard and Marie Esposito. |
| Lucy Valena, Shift Supervisor/Barista Extraordinarire A week after her college graduation ceremony, Lucy Valena was on a train headed to Seattle, Washington, with hopes of learning highbrow coffee-making from the pros. Four months and three cafes later, she returned home to the east coast and settled in Jamaica Plain. Besides being a rad barista, Lucy is an artist intrigued by the figure and working mainly in high-relief drawing and trompe l'oeil. She holds a B.A. in sculptural painting with a minor in two-and-a-half dimensional design from Hampshire College. |
